Disappointed by the RBI’s move to leave the key rate unchanged, India Inc today said the central bank should have accorded precedence to revving up economic growth while curbing inflation. The industry argued that a rate cut would have propelled demand as interest rates remain unduly high. The relationship between the RBI and the government remained contentious through much of the period during the government’s previous stint, which culminated in the resignation of then Governor Urjit Patel. The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), headed by Governor Shaktikanta Das, cut the policy repo rate twice in a row in 2019. There is little justification for the central bank to cut policy rates at this juncture. But there is scope for the RBI to signal the improvement in liquidity conditions, which in turn will likely push banks to cut rates. Liquidity conditions have improved, and overnight rates are at the low end of the LAF corridor.
