The composite rate for Series I Savings Bonds is a combination of a fixed rate, which applies for the 30-year life of the bond, and the semiannual inflation rate. The 2.22% composite rate for I bonds bought from November 2019 through April 2020 applies for the first six months after the issue date. Unless things change dramatically, I am guessing that the current fixed rate of 0.20% is as good as it will get in 2020. So I am also guessing an investment before April 30 will make the most sense. The fixed rate will be 0.20% for I bonds issued from November 1, 2019 through April 30th, 2020. This is a drop from the previous fixed rate of 0.50%. The variable inflation-indexed rate for this 6-month period will be 2.02% (as was predicted). The Treasury released the new I Bond and EE Bond rates today. New rates are announced on every first business day of May and November. It appears the falling interest rate environment impacted the Treasury’s decision about the I Bond fixed rate. It fell from 0.50% to 0.20%. As I had calculated three weeks ago, the I Bond inflation rate is 2.02%. I Bonds purchased from November 2019 to April 2020 will pay an inflation-adjusted rate of 2.02%, creating a composite rate of 2.22%. The current fixed rate is 0.2%, but that will be reset May 1, 2020.
